2010 Chevrolet Camaro Convertible Review and Specifications

As it was then, so it is now. The Camaro, born 40 years ago as Chevrolet’s reply to the pioneering Ford Mustang, is coming out of retirement (since 2002) for a new fight with the namesake ponycar. It’s set to bow for 2009 in at least two coupe models-V-6 and V-8, perhaps called RS and SS, respectively. Convertible versions join up for 2010. Chevrolet confirmed these plans after splashy concept previews at the 2006 and ‘07 Detroit Auto Shows. Recalling the days when the Big Three were still big players, Dodge is reviving its Nixon-era Challenger (1970-74) for 2008.

2010 Chevrolet Camaro Convertible Review and Specifications

General Motors decided to bring back Camaro when the redesigned 2005 Mustang fast proved a hot seller. But Mustang sales have lately cooled, despite the addition of potent pump-primers like the Shelby GT500. Blame record gas prices and renewed public concern over what thirsty vehicles do to the environment. Ford Motor Company’s many well-publicized travails are another factor. All this leads some industry-watchers to think the new Camaro could end up chasing a vanishing market, especially as GM still has troubles of its own.

Convertible or coupe, the reborn Camaros will be much like the concepts, only less exaggerated. Wheels, for instance, will probably be no larger than 20 inches max, versus the show cars’ 21s and 22s. Trim and paint will be toned down too. Otherwise, styling will be the concept blend of today’s Chevy Corvette and cues from the 1969 Camaro, resulting in a more-modern look than either the current Mustang or upcoming Dodge Challenger. The new Camaros should also hew closely to concept dimensions. That means about 7.5 inches more wheelbase than the 2002 models, a similar amount trimmed from overall length, and about 5.5 inches more width. These changes should produce a roomier four-seat cockpit, though space in back (and in the trunks) will remain tight.

A Notable Feature of the 2010 Chevrolet Camaro Convertible

Like last-generation Camaros and the new-era 2009 coupes, the 2010 Chevrolet Camaro convertibles will be built at GM’s St. Therese plant in Oshawa, Ontario, Canada, which has long ranked high in independent audits of vehicle quality, among the best in North America. Let’s hope that record continues with the new Camaros.

Buying Advice for the 2010 Chevrolet Camaro Convertible

Convertibles never sell as well as sister coupes, and the 2010 Chevrolet Camaro convertible should be no exception. Even so, it’s no more likely to be a future collectible than the fixed-top Camaro, especially if demand comes close to GM’s projected 100,000-unit yearly total. And even if that proves optimistic, resale values of all new Camaros will probably depreciate like those of any volume-production new car. Buy one to drive and enjoy, but don’t expect to make money on it in the foreseeable future.

2010 Chevrolet Camaro Convertible Release Date: Dealers should have new Camaro coupes by spring 2009. Convertibles are due a year after that, possibly a bit sooner.

First Test Drive: We think media previews will be staged in late fall or early winter of 2008, doubtless in the sunbelt to allow a top-down assessment.

2010 Chevrolet Camaro convertible Prices: They’re a bit hard to predict, what with an on-sale date some two years away. But however Ford prices its 2010 Mustang convertibles, you can bet GM will try to beat it, even if only by a few dollars. Our guesstimate: The 2010 Chevrolet Camaro convertible will start at around $28,000 for a bare-bones V-6 model and range up $35,000 for a loaded V-8.

"The overwhelmingly enthusiastic response to the Camaro Concept continues to remind me of the uniquely iconic place our products can have in customers’ hearts,” Wagoner said. “Camaro is much more than a car; it symbolizes America's spirit and its love affair with the automobile."

Although the production version of the vehicle was not shown, GM said it would follow very closely the style of the 2006 Camaro Concept. GM confirmed the Camaro would be rear wheel drive, have an independent rear suspension, be offered with both V6 and V8 engines, and have available automatic and manual transmissions. GM is expected to show the production version of the vehicle in a massive debut at the 2010 North American International Auto Show.

Chevrolet General Manager Ed Peper said the new Camaro will appeal to both men and women, and unite customers with fond memories of previous Camaros with those who first experienced a Camaro when the concept was unveiled in January.

“We intend to make the all-new Camaro relevant to younger buyers while retaining its appeal to current fans,” said Peper. “The beauty of the best Camaros is that they have always been beautiful to look at with performance that rivals expensive European GTs. Yet they were practical enough to drive every day and priced within the reach of many new-car buyers.”

2011 Chevy Cruze: GM Aiming for 44 mpg with Next Small Car

When General Motors CEO Fritz Henderson met with the company's new Board of Directors earlier this month, he didn't tell them the future was riding on the much-hyped Chevy Volt. The Wall Street Journal reports, "Mr. Henderson said the most important product launch in 2010 will be the Chevy Cruze, a small car developed overseas to better compete with Honda Civic and Toyota Corolla."

Early reports say the Cruze is a significantly more refined vehicle than the Chevy Cobalt it replaces, but winning the compact car war with the Japanese may depend, in a post-recession market, on fuel economy.

With that in mind, Motor Trend reports, GM is aiming high. "Enter the Special Project, GM's high-fuel-mileage version of the Cruze, fashioned after Chevy's Cobalt XFE and Silverado XFE. Engineers reassigned from GM's Performance Division are tweaking the 1.4-liter turbo and the Cruze's six-speed automatic with the goal of achieving 44 mpg in EPA highway-mileage estimates." A 44 mpg rating would make the Cruze more efficient than a Honda Insight hybrid - without the benefit of hybrid technology.

Chevrolet Impala 2010 Cool Pics And Review

The Impala receives the FlexFuel feature seen in other GM vehicles in the LS, LT, LTZ, 9C1 and 9C3 models. SS drivetrain remains the same and does not receive the FlexFuel feature due to the nature of high performance power. The police receive the Sedans FlexFuel feature to compete against the Ford Crown Victoria Police Interceptor, which also received a feature that allows you to use E85. Furthermore, the 9C1 and 9C3 start coming equipped with an exterior trunk lock glass. Neither feature is available for the civilian version of the car.

Also updated the 9C1 and 9C3 trim levels for the package of policing model, which have no civilians in the SS 303 horsepower (226 kW) V8 engine, but instead use the 3.9 liters (237 cu in ) V6. The reason for this is that the Police use the SS Sedans radiator and cooling system as an upgrade from the standard engine of 3.9 liters (used in the Impala LTZ). GM did not want to design a radiator cooling system and to equip a low production V8 police car. In addition, the heavy duty steel wheels are redesigned, and as such the Police Sedan uses the center of the old original style caps or wheel covers. A spoiler is a factory option available, and cruise control and a standard CD player.

2011 Chevrolet Caprice Police Car

2011 Chevrolet Caprice Police Car
2011 Chevrolet Caprice Police Car

The Police forces across North America is about to be equipped with an all-new Chevrolet Caprice Police Patrol Vehicles for 2011. The new and modern rear-drive Caprice PPV will offer both V-8 and V-6 engines, as well as a hi-tech specialized equipment and features.

The new specialized rear-drive sedan will be available for ordering next year and will hit the streets in early 2011.

Chevrolet’s all-new PPV is not based on existing „civilian” passenger-car, it has been developed originally for police duty. The new Police Patrol Vehicle is distinguished by modern equipment and features like:

Powerful 6.0L V-8 with fuel-saving Active Fuel Management technology and E85 capability delivers expected best-in-class 0-60 acceleration (sub six seconds) and top speed; a V-6 engine will also be offered, beginning in the 2012 model year
Optional front-seat-only side curtain air bags allows a full-width rear-seat barrier for greater officer safety
Two trunk-mounted batteries, with one of them dedicated to powering various police equipment
Designed for five-passenger seating, meaning the upper-center section of the dashboard can be used for equipment mounting without the concern of air bag deployment interference
Compatibility with in-dash touch-screen computer technology
Special front seats designed for the long-term comfort of officers whose car is their effective office, including space that accommodates the bulk of a typical equipment belt

The front seats of the vehicle are wisely designed to conform to the shape of an equipment belt’s various items, allowing the officer’s back to rest properly on the seatback surface. Also the seats are made of high-wear materials that offer great breathability and long-term durability.

The Caprice PPV is based on GM’s global rear-drive family of vehicles that also underpins the Chevy Camaro. It uses the longest wheelbase of the architecture – 118.5 inches (3,010 mm) – along with a four-wheel independent suspension that delivers responsive high-performance driving characteristics that are crucial in some police scenarios.

Caprice PPV’s long wheelbase also contributes to exceptional spaciousness. Compared to the primary competition, its advantages include:

A larger interior volume – 112 cubic feet / 3,172 liters – than the Ford Crown Victoria, including nearly 4 inches (101 mm) more rear legroom
The barrier between the front seat and rear seat is positioned farther rearward, allowing for full front-seat travel and greater recline for officer comfort
At 18 cubic feet (535 liters) free space (beyond battery located in trunk), the Caprice’s trunk volume is large enough to accommodate a full-size spare tire under a flat load surface in the trunk storage area.
The Caprice’s 6.0-liter V-8 is rated at an estimated 355 horsepower (265 kW) with an estimated 384 lb-ft of torque. It is backed by a six-speed automatic transmission that is performance-calibrated for police duty. Additional, police car-specific powertrain and vehicle system features include:

High-output alternator
Engine oil, transmission and power steering coolers
Standard 18-inch steel wheels with bolt-on center caps
Large, four-wheel disc brakes with heavy-duty brake pads
Heavy-duty suspension components
Police-calibrated stability control system
Driver information center in the instrument cluster with selectable speed tracking feature
A host of complementary features are also offered, including special equipment packages such as spotlights; lockouts for the power windows and locks; and an “undercover” street-appearance package (9C3).

To enable more room for interior equipment, the standard radio can be relocated to the trunk, allowing for an in-dash, touch-screen computer to be used.
